On April 12th, 2016, at the Imagine Commerce conference, Mark Lavelle, CEO of Magento, announced the Magento Enterprise Cloud Edition. This is a natural evolution for Magento, starting from the Community Edition, to the Enterprise Edition, and now, the Magento Enterprise Cloud Edition. Magento has thus ushered in a post-SaaS era of eCommerce with the Magento Enterprise Cloud Edition, a PaaS that allows rapid deployment of fully customisable, safe, and scalable online stores, together with a top hosting and managed services infrastructure. While typical SaaS has a locked-in environment that's difficult to get out of and ties a retailer with a vendor, the Cloud Edition enables you to own your code. The new Cloud Edition supports Magento Enterprise Edition from Magento version 2.0.5 onwards, but the good news is that once you upgrade to Magento 2, you can easily implement the Cloud Edition. Since the Cloud Edition is based on Magento Enterprise, you have the flexibility to switch and move from Magento's cloud to your own cloud.
Magento stepped into several strategic partnerships to support the new endeavour. The cloud infrastructure is supported by Amazon Web Services, and features global availability zones, elastic scalability, optimised performance, and full redundancy. The Cloud Edition simplifies contract management for retailers by including a leading content delivery network and performance management tools. Magento has partnered with New Relic, which is great for system integrators to diagnose problems, and it can also be run in the production environment. Magento has also partnered with Fastly, an online real-time CDN that gives businesses complete control over how their content is being served.
ENHANCED FOR MAGENTO, BY MAGENTO
The Cloud Edition features build scripts and service configuration that is developed by Magento, which means that each instance is accurately set up for optimal merchant performance. There is only one contract that you sign with Magento that covers hosting, infrastructure, and the Magento license all in one contract. Magento also pro-actively applies patches and notifies you after the patch has been applied.
EFFICIENCY, SCALABILITY, & HIGH AUTOMATION
The Cloud Edition allows you to host your site where your customers are and scale up the site easily, as you've got your own AWS environment. It also keeps your data in a particular region, which is very important. This all makes the work of development teams easier as there's a continuous cloud integration. The Cloud allows you to have many non-production environments, and easily clone your site. It helps to drive the developer's efficiency. You have zero limitations, as Magento has a quarterly release schedule.
DEPENDABLE AND SAFE DEPLOYMENTS
All of the Cloud's code deployments are Git-based to ensure consistency, with read-only production environments for extra protection.
ELASTICITY FOR PARTNERS
A scripted command line interface and a full REST API provides easy integration with external systems and adaptability with current code management workflows. The Cloud is solution partner friendly; solution partners do the design, implementations, integations, and strategic consulting, while Magento takes care of hosting.
ADAPTABLE DEPLOYMENT TOOLKIT
The Cloud ensures speed when you merge, spin up, clone, and tear down extensive environments for QA testing, development tasks, or production issue diagnosis.
CONSISTENT CLOUD DELIVERY
Move across code branches and development teams with ease, from development to UAT to production.
And hey - it's a great fit for B2B. According to Magento, the Enterprise Cloud Edition will be available for smaller to medium-sized businesses on May 1, 2016.
